Which Size Gets the Most Engagement?
Portrait (4:5) posts take up the most screen real estate in the feed, which means more time in view, which means more engagement. Data from multiple studies shows 4:5 posts get 10-15% more engagement than square posts. Use 1080x1350 as your default unless you have a specific reason for square or landscape.
Common Mistakes
- Uploading at original camera resolution. A 4000x3000 photo gets compressed by Instagram. Upload at 1080px wide for the best quality-to-compression ratio.
- Using landscape for feed posts. Landscape images are tiny in the feed. They get scrolled past faster.
- Ignoring the safe zone for Stories. The top 250px and bottom 250px of Stories are covered by the username and reply bar. Keep important content in the middle 1420px.
